If you have worked in the Radio business for any length of time, this site will be right up your alley! Have you been in the business for 15-20-25 years or longer, and felt repeatedly as if you were over looked, never given recognition to, and just plain "under-rated"? If you remember, in the 70s and 80s, if you were good on the air, and had some degree of a track record, you could land a job in days! You also were constantly reminded by your peers and Management, of how good you are, and that they appreciated you!! Well, not anymore! The "Professional Jealousy" factor is totally out of control. The self centered, know it all attitudes, are rampant!!! You see these folks with 2-3 years in the business with the attitude, "hey, I know everything about the business....there is nothing you can tell me"! |

If you have noticed, there is no email link here. I know there are quite a few radio folks that are being treated, and paid properly. We don't want to hear from them! This site isn't a place to bitch about not being paid enough anyway. It isn't a site to complain because you make 18K, and you should make 30K! It isn't about that. It is here to "expose" the absolute stupidity going on in the business! Why veterans sit on the sidelines, with years of experience, and know how!!! No, it isn't the fault of the people with 2 years in business, that have their jobs! It's the Management. The folks making these ignorant decisions! Why is this going on? |
Get ready............We are going to tell it..like it is! |
This site is focused more on the local theater! How many of you see the "professional jealousy" thing going on out there? How about good solid radio people being "blackballed" by others that don't like someone, or are jealous of them? We see it everyday!!! We see some of the stupidest decisions being made. Hey, what does a Sales Manager know about programming, or placement of talent? |
The Site is new...and we are adding new things daily. |
How is it that the Broadcast Business gets away with certain things, that any other business would be in court with the Labor Board, or the Justice Department? Think about it. |
The constant gripes seem to be about computers, voice tracking, etc! This page isn't about that. The new technology has made the business easier, and down right cool. Who would want to punch carts, when you can use "Hot Keys", and '360 Systems" machines? The voice tracking in order to cut costs, and cut air staff, is a totally separate issue, that we will address later. |
What about the great intimidation factor? We all should be familiar with that one. How many of you have seen PDs that will not hire jocks that are better than they are? "Holy cow, he might get my job"! |
The Great invincible Ones!! Hahaha.........Just wait! |
Clear Channel doesn't want broadcasters; they want employees who'll broadcast what their regional consultants dictate. They don't believe in local radio anymore. Apparently they forget 'local' means listeners. In my book, 'listeners' mean 'ratings' and more importantly 'dollars' for 'local' advertisers. Which brings us back to where it all started. Consultants didn't get that in their 'Consultants 101' course. |
A quote from a radio veteran |
"The General public has NO IDEA what is going on in the radio industry" |
In the November 12 issue of Newsweek Magazine, there's an article on Satellite Digital Radio. There are two competing companies hoping to get America's motoring populace to install a satellite receiver and subscribe 9.99 to 12.95 a month for their service.
When asked about satellite radio versus traditional, commercial radio, Joe Capobianco says..."..Radio got consulted out of any creativity it might have had." (BINGO!!!! He nails it!) Capobianco is senior vice president of content at Sirius. |
"Radio likes people that can bullshit there way out of a situation, instead of people who are honest and work straight ahead like a pack mule!!!!! " |
The new questions we now ask are, where has the logic gone? Why do local programmers with decades of experience get overlooked, in favor of guys with no knowlege of the local area?
Why are radio stations locked up from 6PM to 6AM, or longer, with no one even in the building? Ummmm.........$$$$$$$$. But...what if something happens at 3AM?
Where is the "Proving Ground" where new folks could learn the trade, by doing the overnight shifts?? |

Advice for Jocks from Calvin
Well, the Clear Channel and Infinities of the world got me! I have none of the life that I used to. I have lost my home, and all of my 'toys'. There is no room for a person my age (55), in the great maw of automated formats, and the stations that are playing catch-up in Charlotte, NC, one of the worst if not THE worst creative media markets on the planet. I am now working four hours a day for Metro Traffic, at $10.00 an hour, and selling cell phones at night! I am working fourteen hour days foe less cash than I was making in 1969!
My advice to you all! Forget radio and do something else for a living. It will only get worse.
Good night from lot #12 at the "Happy Acres" trailer park. It was fun for nearly forty years! |
If you grew up in Central or Western NC, and listened to Rock n Roll Radio, you remember "Calvin" on the great "95Q" WROQ. Many thanks for his contribution to this site! |
